Other traditional dishes include nacatamales (stuffed corn dough steamed in banana leaves), vaho (steamed meat with vegetables and plantains), and tajadas (fried plantain slices). It is a hearty and humble cuisine, deeply rooted in the everyday life and identity of the Nicaraguan people.
La cocina nicaragüense es una deliciosa mezcla de influencias indígenas, españolas y afrocaribeñas. Utiliza ingredientes locales y sencillos como el maíz, los frijoles rojos, el arroz, el plátano, el cerdo y el queso fresco. El plato nacional es el gallo pinto, una combinación frita de arroz con frijoles, que suele comerse en el desayuno. También son tradicionales los nacatamales (masa de maíz rellena y cocida en hoja de plátano), el vaho (carne al vapor con vegetales y plátano) y las tajadas (láminas de plátano frito). Es una cocina casera, abundante y muy representativa de la cultura nicaragüense.»
